The Community determined that
Affordable
Housing,
Commercial Revitalization, and Education & Support Services would be the key items of the Strategic Plan.
Affordable Housing & Community Development
To improve the quality of life for neighborhood residents, we had to foster the development of additional housing and create a safe environment. At the same time
we had to improve access to public and business services and promote job training activities and placement.
Phase I of the Alamodome/Historic Gardens has been completed and will soon be joined by Phase II. This is one of the most aggressive downtown urban developments in recent history. The development of single and multi-family in the Springview area is also near completion.
Commercial & Neighborhood Revitalization
In order to promote economic development and subsequent job creation in the
Enterprise Community (E.C.) area, it was imperative to attract industry into the area, facilitate the retention and expansion of existing business ventures.
Due to the limited allocation of funds the San Antonio Enterprise
Community has diligently worked to leverage public and private sector funds, to improve the lives of area residents, and to promote small business development. To date the program has leveraged over 800 million
dollars to address neighborhood needs and to revitalize the community. It is easy to look around and see numerous improvements in the inner-city
Enterprise Community area. Although funded by other Federal, State, Local, and Private-Sector resources, they were fostered by the Enterprise Community Designation.
Education & Support Services
In order to empower residents and foster family self-sufficiency,
we must address these problems: illiteracy, an escalating school drop-out rate,
teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, child care, medical services transportation,
and other support services.
In order to address this monumental problem, residents, local elected officials, school districts, and the federal government came together to create an environment more conducive for academic achievement and skill development. |
